Who Is Michael Velez?

Michael is a mixture of actor, performer, writer, producer, promoter and interpreter. The hearing son of Deaf parents, Michael is a co-founder of Half-N-Half. He has performed nationally and on his own in Copenhagen, Sydney and San Juan.

Michael has appeared in the Tony award winning play The Shadowbox as well as written and co-produced several short films. He has produced several evenings of entertainment for the International CODA Conferences and The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Conventions.

As a promoter he has hosted themed dance parties and events in various nightclubs in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Interpreting since 1980, especially for Performing Arts, he has had the opportunity to work abroad in Denmark, Holland, Australia and Thailand as well as on cruise ships sailing the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Southeast Asia and Alaska.

As a solo artist Michael has performed his one man show of music and stories about growing up hearing with deaf parents. He also has a repertoire of Musically Inspired ASL Storytelling creating shows that touch him and his audience in humorous and significant ways. He has performed throughout California as well as abroad.

As an actor he has appeared in two short films and two music sign language videos. He has written and directed these films as well. He has also appeared in his first speaking role onstage as one of the leads in the play The Shadow Box. This is a powerful drama about the dilemma facing those living under a clearly defined death sentence, and the people who love them. This was his most challenging work to date since he could no longer improv along with his side kick Sherry.

Michael has weaved his love of travel into his interpreting work by interpreting abroad at world sporting competitions as well as interpreting on cruise ships sailing the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, The Panama Canal, Mediterranean, Alaska and The Mexican Riviera. His work with RSVP Vacations has enabled him to become a travel agent booking vacations for deaf gay and lesbian travelers.
