Who Is Sherry Hicks?

Sherry is an extraordinary artist who has a developed improvisation in ASL storytelling. Sherry blends the elements of theatre, music, movement and native ability with sign language. ASL is her first language and all of her family are Deaf; she is the only hearing member (OH-CODA). This rich experience has shaped her views which is what Sherry calls Deaf-centric and CODA-centric. She has written three plays; two creative non-fiction literary works and produced several videotapes of her performances. Her career has spanned three decades and her work is frequently considered to be the edge of Deaf culture which also leaves us at the heart of CODA culture.Sherry has written three plays as well as two creative non-fiction literary works. Her One Woman Shows include “Phoenix The”, “Triple Tongues” and most recently “The” Coda Stories from the Soul.

From graduate school at the New College of California with an MA and MFA in Writing and Consciousness she has produced two manuscripts:

“Chameleon Chaos” – a creative non-fiction personal memoir

“Deaf World meets CODA Nation” – critical essays on the boundaries and border lines of diverse communities merging including deaf, hearing and interpreter scenarios.
(Currently seeking publication)

Topics published by NY State Dept. of Education five year grant for the training of educational interpreters provided me the opportunity to develop curricula for five workshops in a box. These can be accessed and taught by other professionals in the field.

Sherry has vast experience in a variety of venues, with a myriad of styles. She has been called one of the best musical interpreters in the business.

Interpreting for such headliners as: The Indigo Girls, Van Morrison, Run DMC, The Rolling Stones, John Denver, Oprah, Maya Angelou, Rhiannon, Holly Near, Ferron, and Laura Nyro, just to name a few. Diversity of performance is not an issue.

Sherry’s long involvement in Children of Deaf Adults, CODA, a educational and support organization for the hearing children of Deaf parents has given her a unique perspective on issues and trends that effect codas and kodas (Kids of Deaf Adults).

Sherry is an interpreter, interpreter educator, ASL teacher and coda entertainer. Some of her solo work can be divided into the following sections:

  • Interpreted Theatre – Sherry has vast experience in a variety of venues, with a myriad of styles. She has been called one of the best musical interpreters in the business.
  • Workshops – Sherry offers a variety of workshops geared toward different audiences. You can bringing her study to your neighborhood.
  • Writer/Producer/Solo Performer – Sherry is a prolific artist and has written three plays as well as two creative non-fiction literary works. Her One Woman Shows include “Phoenix The”, “Triple Tongues” and most recently “The”.
  • ASL Instructor/Interpreter Educator
    Sherry has had the opportunity to teach at several distinguished institutions such as:
    * Vista College in Berkeley, CA.,
    * Ohlone College in Fremont, CA. (Interpreter Preparation Program),
    * LaGuardia Community College, Long Island City, NY (Interpreter Education Program)
    She has taught most courses of an interpreter education curriculum and ASL classes using Signing Naturally extensively.

Sherry’s work has also been the inspiration of other writers and performers. One such collaboration has been the creation of ORANGE EYES: The Amazing Story of Coda-Talk. Written by Michele Bishop and Sherry Hicks. Edited by Sherry Hicks.
